  • BORN TO BE A WARRIOR- IS WHAT DESCRIBES ME THE BEST! – RASHMI RAI

BORN TO BE A WARRIOR- IS WHAT DESCRIBES ME THE BEST! – RASHMI RAI

Rashmi Rai was born in a Brahmin family with basic roots in UP, brought up in Nagpur Maharashtra. Pursued my education in Chandrapur, Nagpur & Pune as my father was a Govt. employee working as General Manger in Western Coalfields Limited, Nagpur and my mother a home maker growing 3 kids along with managing her social life. We are 3 siblings in my family, 2 younger brothers – Mayank Rai – works for General Motors in Michigan, USA and younger –Prashant Rai & his wife Bhanu Rai, both Neurologists in Texas,USA.

My childhood was very luxurious and pampered as I was the only girl between 2 brothers. I too fulfilled my parent’s dream of being a good daughter and top scorer and definitely Class Leader/Captain every year in a Convent school. Completed my Electronics Engineering from Nagpur in 1st Division.

I pursued higher studies, MBA in Telecommunication from BITM, Pune where I spent my 2 best years of life with knowledge, personality development and soft skills. I was made the DISCIPLINE COORDINATOR of entire Balaji Society hostel (Boys & Girls) which comprised of 5 colleges& Discipline coordinator in BITM too which was an Achievement for me. I was directly appointed by Dean Dr.Col. A.BalaSubramanian. I explored myself in many areas participating in Fashion shows competing with different colleges and we were 2nd Runner up. I was also involved in creating the theme and designing the fashion show costume and walking the ramp with my Cultural Coordinator in the College winning as 2nd runners up. Successfully completed my MBA with 1st class.

Now comes the real life- Professional life of facing the world and showing the skills built in years to make me what I am professionally! Got campus selected and joined Satyam in Hyderabad. Something happens which you never think of in your life once you join a Top 5 companies of India, I was promoted in the company, myideas provided for Quality were recognized in the company and I was awarded.

Next phase was the actual Learnings of my LIFE – movement to DELHI. I was transferred to Delhi and during this phase my personal life was in troubled waters. I went into depression and just kept myself moving. But during the toughest phase you come across the best of people who love and care for you. I found the best of friends who supported me and helped me stand strong. The most blessed part of life was meeting my divine GURU – H.H ARCHNA DIDI. I am part of Celebrating Life Foundation.

My Guru taught me YOGA & MEDITATION which made me stand strong for my cause. Under her guidance, I learnt & started taking decisions of my life. I could only see the positive aspects of life. I could feel the positive first ray of light as my name signifies. I got the calmness and peacefulness of mind. LIFE became a celebration for me and I enjoyed every moment of my life. This changed my aura and personality completely.

After living and exploring my life in Delhi for a year I was back to Hyderabad and continued my professional life in Satyam. Took up new opportunities and joined one of my dream companies IBM in Bangalore. Bangalore gave me the best professional and personal life balance. I started developing good relations in company, friends and family too. LIFE started offering me opportunities to explore and help people who are in pain. There were people who used to share their feelings of grief and sorrow to me. They wanted to know what’s my key to happiness ? The answer was only one – YOGA & MEDITATION. YOGA was introduced to me by my MOTHER.

I religiously used to visit temples for more positive vibrations and thoughts. I had also joined GYM for physical workouts and understand and try to make balance in life. On weekends, I used to go to different workshops involving different aspects of life like IT innovation, Tech Talks, Personality development sessions which involved creative ideas and thoughts, exploring places in closed groups of friends and much more.

I visited London for a friends’ reunion meet post to Delhi. I visited Scotland and since then got in love with Edinburgh. I loved exploring the streets of London and the night before my return to Bangalore, on the OXFORD Street I wished to get back to London with my true heart.

During this course of time I was also looking for a good match for marriage. After my return from London in 2013, March 2014 – I met my husband through Matrimonial. We had long distance relationship, he being in London & me in Bangalore. 5th Dec 2014 we got married in the holy land of Tirupaty with all the blessings of Almighty and family. He is the love of my LIFE who gave my visions a reality and still supports me strongly. He is the most humble, respectful and a man of dignity I have met who loves his family the most and cares for it from the bottom of his heart.

Got married, left India with mixed emotions but happy to make things happen as I wanted. Living a happy married Life, finding a job was next target. But life can’t be so easy, this time as I had to adapt to new culture and traditions following Indian customs and traditions. Travelling to UK as tourist and living in UK as citizen are 2 very different aspects of life and I fell under 2nd category.

Got my job in Heineken, Edinburgh. We moved to Scotland and since then enjoyed Scottish weather. Now we have a beautiful family with my daughter Pranika as a new addition who is close to getting 3 years. I kept on doing small charities in my life always. Last year I raised a small amount of fund too for St.Jude’s cancer research for children. I help United Nations Refugee Agency in various contributions and I keep getting their letters for appreciation and contribution. I am taking sessions on Allergy Awareness at various places and events now. Also running campaign for stopping Human Trafficking to help kids and women grow as happy people in life. Now is the time to give back to the society what I have acquired all these years which are for the benefit of society.

I participated in beauty pageant at National level and I was awarded Mrs Scotland Universe. Since then I have never looked back.
Apart from main titles have also received the Gold and Silver titles.
    • Main Title – Mrs India UK Classic 2019 – 3rd Runner Up
    • Gold Title – Mrs Best National Costume 2019 for becoming Peacock – National Bird of India
    • Silver Title – Mrs Popular 2019
In Dec 2019, I travelled for competing in Mrs Universe despite getting affected by Chicken pox just 7 days before landing in Guangzhou, China. Again as a warrior defeated chicken pox and participated with full enthusiasm and was awarded sub-title of Mrs Faithful Universe.

It’s a beautiful journey of life and I fulfilled one of my dreams which remain a dream for many girls.

I used to take my own Yoga and Meditation class @ my house for charity so that people will gradually pick it up. Any small exercise that one teaches counts in people’s lives. Looking into my dedication to Yoga and Meditation and the impacts I have in people’s lives, I have been approached by couple of colleagues in office to start a Yoga and Meditation class in office.

Every stage of my Life has made me a WARRIOR and I could come out with flying colours with greatest learnings – Optimism, Discipline, Dedication, Determination and my Creativity has helped me grow as person. Mrs India UK is most deserving, strong & glamorous platform for all the Strong Ladies in this world.

Wish to spread my wings of joy and happiness all around.

  • INDIA’S BEAUTY AMBASSADOR – SHAHNAZ HUSAIN

INDIA’S BEAUTY AMBASSADOR – SHAHNAZ HUSAIN

To her exclusively goes the credit of bringing out the therapeutic value of herbs from the mists of antiquity and legend, combining them with scientific research and practice. Shahnaz Husain has done so much for her country’s image abroad that she truly deserves the sobriquet of India’s Beauty Ambassador– Washington Post

What inspired you to become an entrepreneur and what is your long term vision?
Translating my dreams and ideas into reality inspired me to become an entrepreneur. During my training in London, I came across instances of damage caused by chemical treatments and products. I was determined to find a natural alternative. I decided to evolve treatments that are safe and without risks. My idea was to provide herbal beauty care, based on the principle of “care and cure.” I knew that I must have the freedom to implement my ideas and this can only be done in one’s own enterprise. An entrepreneur needs a vision, in order to make dreams a reality. I have promoted Brand India and Ayurveda internationally, with a crusader’s zeal and succeeded in putting India on the world beauty map.

Who has been the greatest influence in your life and why?
My father has been the greatest influence and inspiration in my life. I come from a conservative family, but I was fortunate to have a broadminded, Oxford-educated father, Chief Justice N.U. Beg, who put me through schooling in an Irish convent and instilled in me a love of poetry and English literature. He also encouraged the right combination of traditional values and progressive ideas and I learnt to love and respect the rich heritage of India. My father inspired me to follow my dreams.

You became a Case Study and then a Subject for Harvard Business School. Tell us about it.
I was invited to speak at Harvard Business School on how I established an international brand without commercial advertising, becoming a Harvard Case Study on Brand Creation. Now I am a Subject in Harvard for “Emerging Markets” in recognition of the international market created by me for Indian Ayurvedic beauty care. The Quote by Harvard Professor Geoffrey Jones, Professor of Business History, mentions the reason why they chose me. He says, “We felt compelled to include Shahnaz Husain in Harvard Business School’s Creating Emerging Markets project, both because of her entrepreneurial role in creating India’s natural beauty market and her strong belief in the importance of corporate social responsibility.”

How was your recent visit to London and the Ayurveda Conference?
London is like a second home for me. We have established brand loyalty in the U.K and our products have sold at prestigious locations, including Harrods and Selfridges. Our success and goodwill continues to generate an increasing demand for our products. The High Commission of India in the U.K. also organized a Conference on “Ayurveda – a Power for Health & Beauty” at India House. I was invited as “Special Guest.” I spoke on Ayurveda and said that the western world is fighting with its back to the wall. With the dangerous side-effects of chemicals, they have no option but to turn to Ayurveda and India. The High Commissioner of India, Ruchi Ghanashyam, spoke about my contribution in popularising Ayurveda. Indeed, I believe that India must and will lead the entire world into the next century with the plant power of Ayurveda.

Your products have sold at international stores in London. Tell us about it.
Shahnaz Herbal is the only Indian herbal cosmetic company that has sold at leading international stores, like Harrods and Selfridges in London, Galeries Lafayette in Paris, Bloomingdales in New York, La Rinascente in Milan, El Corte Inglis in Madrid and the Seibu chain in Japan. In fact, when there was an announcement of free consultation by me at the start of sales of my products at Lloyds Pharmacy, Selfridges, all the products were sold out before the inauguration! Within two weeks of the opening at Selfridges, the Shahnaz products posted record breaking sales, touching ₤1000 per day. In fact, Shahnaz Husain range touched record breaking sales again at Selfridges where a single customer bought products worth ₤4,334 in a single transaction.

You have received the Success Award and the Padma Shri. What about other prestigious awards?
Yes, I became the first woman in 107 years to receive the “World’s Greatest Woman Entrepreneur Award” from Success, the New York based business magazine and was also honoured with the Padma Shri Award. Recently, I received two prestigious awards in the British Parliament for “Pioneering Ayurveda Worldwide” and the “Ayurveda Excellence” award.

What is your opinion about Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial Intelligence is ideal for us, as our treatments are customized and prescribed. My experience has been in Ayurvedic beauty care. Ayurveda may be an ancient system, but it is relevant to the modern world. Today, we can combine Ayurvedic Inheritance with Artificial Intelligence. We can prepare a data base and make an online program, taking individual details into account, like country, climate, skin tone and texture, allergies, blood picture, haemoglobin, past and current treatments, etc. The customer can refer to an Online Form and fill in the details. Thus, with the help of Artificial Intelligence, we can formulate a custom-made product for each individual, while the customer finds a personal skin or hair profile and buys a personalized product online. In a world dominated by Artificial Intelligence, Ayurvedic Inheritance is India’s gift to the world.

How is your brand positioned in the Indian cosmetic market? Tell us about your product innovations.
The Shahnaz Husain brand is positioned as the leader in the premium segment of Ayurvedic beauty care. We have evolved over 375 organic formulations for beauty and health care, using 1500 different plant ingredients, essential oils, even precious metals and gems. We have launched some revolutionary products, which include the famed Diamond Collection, Plant Stem Cells, the Flower Botanic ranges, as well as the Chemoline range for cancer patients, to help alleviate the effects of chemotherapy. The products do not contain parabens, sulphates, mineral oil or synthetic colours. We will be launching our Just Me range for the middle segment. The Shahnaz Husain brand has gone from strength to strength over the last four decades.

What is your business model, which has brought you national and international laurels?
Our business model is a unique franchise system, which is at the core of the success of the Shahnaz Husain brand. In fact, the fast-paced extension of the Shahnaz Herbal salons is due to this system, by which the franchisee obtains the right to use the Shahnaz Herbal name and treatments, as well as enjoy a margin of profit on the sale of products. Apart from strong branding, the Shahnaz Husain franchise offers an established business model with proven success rate and efficacy.

What do you feel about e-commerce and online shopping?
The internet has really changed the way we do business. Shahnaz Husain products can be bought at our online on our own website. As I mentioned earlier, Artificial Intelligence can make it easier to search for custom-made products and also to manufacture them, taking details from a data base. Since internet traffic has increased phenomenally, it is an ideal medium to find potential customers and tell them about the availability of your products. In fact, our online store is a great success.

    What are your Future Plans?
We will continue to launch advanced products in Ayurvedic beauty care in the international markets. Beauty and the Best Magazine was in conversation with Meenakshi Dutt, an icon of the glamour industry and a beacon of inspiration for many aspiring make-up artistes. She has broken the glass ceiling in unimaginable ways and has styled herself into a persona that begets respect in the field of this career path. She believes staying positive and dreaming big is essential to create the life of your dreams.

    What business are you into?

Our forte is Makeup and hairstyling. We aim to teach the craft to new people who have dreams in their eyes and talent in their fingers. The glamour world thrives on new styles and looks and we update our skills regularly to create novel looks. The more Avant garde the better. Creating global trends in desi environs is our style statement.

Who has inspired you the most?
People who have the determination to win and move ahead in life are my source of inspiration. It is a trait I admire, not a person as such. There are many who have lit fires within my consciousness. Shehnaz Hussain is a feisty entrepreneur in my industry who has shown the way forward.

If not this which profession would you choose?
I was always someone who has been attracted to creativity. The Plan B of my life would have been being an actress or dancer. In the early phase of life, the idea of being the cabin crew in an international airline had caught my fancy.

Makeup was the other choice I had in mind and with time it took the front seat. Since then there has been no turning back. I would also like to advise young people to have more than one career choice in mind. Knowledge is the key. Learn everything about your trade and keep yourself updated. Do what you love and works best for you.

What are the challenges that you faced? The field I have chosen is still in a nascent phase. There are a plethora of challenges that you need to face when you are in the throes of establishing yourself as a makeup artist. The bridal market is another huge challenge that you have to conquer. The new crop of makeup artistes are more tech savvy and have garnered huge exposure. It is a roller coaster ride that keeps any professional on her toes. It is fun and exhilarating at the same time.

    What differentiates you from others?
The Meenakshi Dutt Makeovers team has the zeal and the passion to follow the latest trends in makeup and hairstyling. The softest look to the loudest makeup can be nailed with ease at our premises. The looks we specialize are Arabic, Cut crease and sequin eyes. The latest trends and classic makeup are both equally liked by our patrons. Our capability to add creativity and uniqueness to our work is our academy’s hallmark.

How do you keep your clients happy?
Clients always like a personal touch and connection when they visit us. The key to customer delight is understanding their needs and requirements and add our suggestions to the mix to help them reach a solution. The end result is always an enhanced look. We have so many happy clients who endorse us to their friends and family too. Our reputation is growing.

The New Face with Exciting Ideas Shivangi Dutt
Heir to an icon of the Indian makeup industry, harboring some prolific ideas for herself and their brand, and with a dream to transform the current makeup trends, ShivangiDutt is the new face of the famed makeup brand MDM Makeovers and the able daughter of ace makeup artist.

MeenakshiDutt, Shivangi recently completed her university education in the UK, raked up an A1 grade in her makeup and hairstyling degree, and has now come to India to pursue her career. The Beauty and the Best team got in touch with her to pen down her visions for the Indian market, the excerpts of which are here.

    What is your style file?
My style file is all about myself and what my mood is like at a particular moment. Even in my work, I like to replicate that idea by providing a makeover depending on the audience and the ambiance. Not all situations can have the same makeup. The art has to be different for a grungy and cute setting.

    How’s your work shaping up?
Right now, I am focusing on mainly clientele-based work. I have hardly been in India for 2-3 months now and really haven’t had the opportunity to explore the other areas of makeup. But soon enough, I would like to discover more as the potential available in the makeup industry is so vast.

Tell us about your professional training in your field of work?
During my time at the university, I have worked with multiple professional photographers and their shoots. I was also a part of the makeup team of the Graduate Fashion Week in London where we worked side by side with L’Oréal. Then I interned at a UK-based magazine called the Beauty Papers and now I am here working for MDM Makeovers.

Your mother is a legend in the makeup industry, do you feel you can match up to her success Mom is an inspiration to everyone, isn’t she? She started at a different time and I have always seen her work very hard. I hope to give the same amount of dedication to my work and wish to reach a level of success that will satisfy me.

Are you planning to make a mark in the Bollywood industry as a makeup artist?
Stepping into Bollywood as a makeup artist will be really exciting. It is not about looking good there. You create stories with makeup, bring fiction to life, and that is something I look forward to doing.

What are your views on the Indian makeup industry?
Right now, I feel the Indian makeup industry is majorly about weddings. However, there aresomany unexplored areas out there which I look forward to exploring.

As a new age Makeup artist with international experience, how do you feel the Indian makeup industry differs from the West?
The key difference I feel is that in the West, makeup is a form of art. Here, on the other hand, it is about looking good. Hopefully, I can bring the West-like mindset in India as well.

What innovations would you like to introduce in the Indian makeup industry?
The first thing I would like to bring in is to treat faces as canvasses instead of applying a set of makeup to all faces.

Who would you call the most stylish style icon in India?
If I have to name someone, it will definitely be Waheeda Rehman.

What are the biggest makeup blunders that people usually make? Blunders in makeup happen when artists do not understand what they are doing. After makeup, the features of the face must be prominent and it should look clean.

What is your definition of makeup?
In one sentence, makeup is all about art.

    What are your future plans?

I would really like to work in the field of prosthetic makeup in India. Plus, all other different avenues in the industry that are still unexplored.

Tell us three things that you have learned from your mother?

Well, she has taught me so many things. But the top three would be compassion, perseverance, and to always believe in oneself. Makeup & Styling done by Shivangi Dutt
